Median vs. Mean IncomeWe present the most recent mean (or "average") and median hourly wages for preschool teachers and child care workers here as reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The mean wage is the average of all reported wages. In contrast, the median wage is the wage that lies at the midpoint of all the reported wages. For example, half of all wages earned by US child care workers fall below the median of $6.91, and half are above. The mean hourly wage for all US child care workers is $7.42. Mean wages, which can be skewed upward by a few reports of high wages, tend to be somewhat higher than median wages. The median wage which identifies the midpoint of the distribution of all wages may be more typical of that earned by workers than reported averages. |
